Like the Azores and the Canary Islands, Madeira has arisen from a volcano. The cliffs of the islands are up to 4,000 m high. The sea coast of Madeira is steep and rocky. The second steepest cliff is situtaed in Madeira which rises 580m above sea level.

It has been conjectured that the Phoenicians discovered Madeira in the sixth century BC. In 1419, the Portuguese navigator João Gonçalves Zarco rediscovered Madeira.

 

 

In 1580, Spain conquered the island, administration was centralized.

 

In 1640, the Portuguese revolted against the Spanish occupants. Madeira became Portuguese again.

 

Economy: Madeira was one of the poorest European regions until the 70s. The economy has grown during the past 10 years. Tourism is the most important sector of the economy.
